New Government Portal Opens for Businesses to Claim Tariff Refunds
A new online system launched today that allows businesses to apply for
refunds on tariffs (taxes on imported goods) they previously paid.
This comes after the Supreme Court ruled that certain tariffs were illegally imposed.
The portal is called
CAPE (Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries), and it's run by US Customs and Border Protection.
How Much Money Is Involved?
The government estimates that up to $166 billion could be returned to businesses.
So far, more than 56,000 companies have signed up, representing about $127 billion in potential refunds.
How Does the Refund Process Work?
While the portal is designed to be user-friendly, getting a refund isn't simple. Here's what businesses need to know:
- Documentation is key: Companies must provide detailed records of their imports, including proof of what they paid in tariffs.
- Accuracy matters: Applications with errors or missing information may be delayed or rejected.
- Processing time: Refunds are expected to take 60 to 90 days, though delays are possible if demand is high or technical problems arise.
Trade expert Pete Mento warned that while the system looks easy to use, applications will still be carefully reviewed before refunds are approved.
Who Can Apply Right Now?
The first phase covers tariffs that either:
- Haven't been finalized yet, or
- Were completed within the last 80 days
- This accounts for about 63 percent of eligible refunds. More categories will be added in the coming months.
Will Consumers Benefit?
Unfortunately, everyday shoppers probably won't see direct refunds. Tariffs are paid by businesses that import goods—not by individual consumers.
Whether companies lower their prices after receiving refunds is up to them.
What's Next?
There's still uncertainty about future trade policy. Government officials have hinted that new tariffs could be introduced as soon as this summer using different legal methods.
Financial experts are advising businesses not to wait. Bryan Graiff from consulting firm Armanino said, "We're advising our clients to prepare for the opportunity to get a refund, because we think it's going to be a pretty complex process."
The Bottom Line
This new portal offers a real chance for businesses to recover money they paid in tariffs. However, success depends on having the right paperwork and submitting accurate applications.
For companies that are well-prepared, this could provide significant financial relief.
