Why There Is No SSI Payment in August (And When to Expect Your Money)

If you rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and notice your calendar is empty for August, don't worry—your benefits are not being cut.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is simply adjusting the payment schedule because of how the calendar falls.

The Reason for the Schedule Change

Normally, SSI payments go out on the 1st of every month. However, August 1 falls on a Saturday.

Whenever a payment date lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the SSA sends out benefits on the business day before it.

Because of this rule:

July 1: You receive your regular July SSI payment.
July 31 (Friday): You receive your August SSI payment early.

Since you get your August benefit on the last day of July, no second SSI payment will arrive during August.

Important Budgeting Tip: Getting paid early does not mean extra money. Because you won't receive another deposit in August, the payment you receive on July 31 will need to stretch through the end of August.

When Do Other Social Security Benefits Arrive in August?

The early payment schedule only applies to SSI. Other Social Security benefits—such as retirement, disability, and survivor benefits—follow their standard monthly schedules:

If born between the 1st and 10th: Paid on Wednesday, August 12
If born between the 11th and 20th: Paid on Wednesday, August 19

If born between the 21st and 31st: Paid on Wednesday, August 26

Note: Beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 (or who receive both Social Security and SSI) will get their standard Social Security payment on Monday, August 3.

What to Do If Your Payment Doesn't Arrive

If you don't see your SSI deposit in your bank account or on your Direct Express debit card on July 31:

Check with your bank first: Banks sometimes experience short processing delays.
Wait three mailing days: The SSA recommends waiting 3 business days before reporting a missing payment.
Contact Social Security: You can call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or log in to your my Social Security account to verify your details and status.

Other Months with Early SSI Payments

This calendar shift happens whenever the 1st of a month falls on a weekend or holiday. Later, you can expect similar shifts for:

November 2026 benefit: Paid on Friday, October 30 (since Nov. 1 is a Sunday).
January 2027 benefit: Paid on Thursday, December 31 (since Jan. 1 is New Year's Day).
