A Disappointing Dive into AI-Driven Content in Spotify Wrapped 2024

After a much-anticipated wait, Spotify released its annual feature, Spotify Wrapped 2024, on Wednesday morning.

However, the release left many loyal users disappointed. They expressed their dissatisfaction through jokes and memes on social media.

What is Spotify Wrapped?

Spotify Wrapped is known for summarizing your listening habits over the year and packaging them into fun, easy-to-share insights, almost like those music personality quizzes.

The feature allows users to share their unique (sometimes questionable) music tastes online and see new data points and categories, such as their top 100 songs playlist.

In previous years, for example, Spotify created a custom “Sound Town” that matched listeners' music styles with real-world locations.

This year, listeners felt that Spotify relied too much on artificial intelligence (AI), missing out on the rich, detailed metrics they expected. Some even commented that Spotify’s promotional materials were more interesting than Wrapped itself.

What went wrong with Spotify Wrapped 2024?

This year’s Wrapped lacked some usual details like the top music genres and top albums. Instead, it offered a “Music Evolution” list, showcasing quirky and creatively named music micro-genres that aren't common outside of Spotify.

These unusual genre labels quickly turned into meme material, blurring the line between official categories and those concocted by online users. “Pink Pilates Princess” was among the most popular phrases to circulate.

Critics blamed this shift on Spotify’s increased reliance on AI and recent layoffs, suggesting that these factors contributed to a less engaging experience.

AI-powered Podcasts: A Misstep?

Spotify also introduced an AI-generated podcast feature, which transformed Wrapped data into a podcast format. However, the execution fell flat.

According to feedback, the robotic voices lacked the personal touch and genuine interaction that make podcasts engaging.

Some listeners were so disappointed by this year’s Wrapped that they decided to stop using Spotify entirely. On a brighter note, Spotify did include a personal touch by giving a short thank-you video from one of users’ top artists.

For example, a video of Weird Al Yankovic simply eating a sandwich was popular among fans.

Despite the issues, many users still enjoyed making jokes about their Spotify Wrapped results.

General Sentiment

Overall, the reception to Spotify Wrapped 2024 was overwhelmingly negative across social media platforms like TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Reddit, diverging from the typically celebratory responses seen in past years.

This year, the overuse of AI in various creative sectors has been noticeable, and not always well-received. With companies increasingly turning to AI for content creation, there’s a growing dissatisfaction among consumers towards this trend.

The disappointment with Spotify Wrapped 2024 fits into a larger narrative of frustration with AI’s role in creative outputs, which some online commentators have dubbed “the year of slop,” highlighting a widespread distaste for poorly executed AI-generated content.
